The ArtCenter’s current home was designed to fulfill a long list of needs and desires for performance, studios, classrooms and gallery spaces.   An old grocery store space in a decrepit shopping center in the middle of Carrboro provided barely adequate square footage that needed to be transformed into a functional and inspiring home for the ArtCenter’s programs within a very tight budget.  The interior was conceived as a kind of “artistic village” with the gallery as a central gathering space in the “village square”.  Large skylight structures in the central areas provide natural lighting in the central space and to adjacent functional spaces through windows and interior skylights which open on to the central space.  The gallery also serves as the lobby for the main theater/performance space.  Exterior renovations were limited, yet transforming to the old shopping center.
